Anti-corruption advocate Edem Senanu has said the legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is to blame for the recent Interpol Red Notice issued against their client.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Mr. Senanu, who is the Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption, said the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had no other option but to act after Ofori-Atta failed to show up for questioning on June 2, 2025

Interpol declared Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted on June 5, 2025, following a public announcement by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng that extradition efforts had begun to bring him back to Ghana.

Mr. Senanu explained that the OSP had asked multiple times for a clear and credible medical report explaining Ofori-Atta’s health condition and why he could not attend the meeting. However, no proper documents were submitted.

“His lawyers had earlier agreed he would appear on June 2,” Senanu said. “But without any medical proof or proper communication, the OSP was left with no choice.”

He added that Ofori-Atta’s lawyers could have helped avoid the current situation by arranging direct talks between the OSP and his doctors. That way, the state would have had confidence in the reasons given for his absence.

“This could have been avoided. It’s unfortunate,” Senanu said. “There should have been better cooperation with the OSP.”

The situation has sparked public debate, with many calling for greater transparency from public officials and their legal teams when dealing with state institutions.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently wanted by Interpol while the OSP continues efforts to bring him back to face investigations.
